Lesson Plan on Long & Short Sounds - March, 2020
We have been learning about the fact that music is made of sounds and silences AND these musical sounds can be long or short, high or low. Music teachers can often use what are called "icons" to represent short & long sounds and students can use these for pre-reading skills.
Take a look at the poster above & see if your child can read the short & long sounds. They can check their answers by listening to my reading of the long and short pictures. After they know how to read it correctly, can they name that tune? They can check their answers by listening to the song afterwards!

Lesson Plan you can watch your child perform at home - the Story of the Child and the Monster!! Posted 10/19
Right before Halloween, we learned to act a story outlined by Brahms Hungarian Dance #3 using puppets. The students made their "puppets" in class this week and can act out the story for you. In the story, a child is playing at the playground. They don't realize that a baby monster is sneaking up on them. However, when the child turns around to look, that baby monster hides in its cave. The child goes back to playing at the park & the baby monster decides to try again. The first time the child looks, the monster hides behind a tree, the second time the child looks, the monster hides behind a boulder, the third time the child looks, the monster hides behind a picnic table. Finally, the baby monster decides to confront the child BUT...when the child turns around, the CHILD says (4 times): "MONSTER, get out of here!" The child chases the monster back into its cave and our story ends with the child taking a bow!!

Overview of Kindergarten Music
Kindergarten students attend music class once a week for 50 minutes. Their time is filled with musical explorations.
Kindergarteners start by learning to listen, respond and echo or mirror in music. They meet our class pet, a musical cat named“Arpeggio” who is teaching them how to be a “copycat”. They learn to use their voices in many ways. They learn the basics of pitch (up or down or stay the same) and rhythm (long sounds, short sounds and rests). These youngsters learn best when they are active and we will learn a variety of children’s songs, dances and musical games this year.
How can you aid in your child’s musical development?
Ask your child to show the steady beat by tapping or clapping whenever they hear music! Use different voices when you tell stories and encourage them to explore their voice as well. Play a variety of music at home or in the car. Finally, ask them to teach you a song or poem from class.
A Musical "ABC" Video - Posted 9/19
The Kindergarten Kids are busy learning about what is the same & different in music. For example, notes can repeat which is staying the same, or notes can go up or down which is different. Instruments can look and sound the same or different depending upon whether they make their sounds from wooden, metal or skin materials. Students are also finding that pitched instruments like the xylophone, have letter names for the pitches and these letter names make different sounds.
This following video will introduce students to a musical set of ABC's that I am sure they will enjoy!
